Herman Eugene Sander, 88 years, 05 months, 07 days of Gainesville, Florida, formerly of Schnecksville passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 2, 2008 in the home of his daughter, Joan M. Bachman after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Marie L. (Rau) Sander. The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary last August 22.

Born in Bowmanstown on March 25, 1920, Herman was the son of the late Herman “Harry” and Marguerite (Siller) Sander. A graduate of Palmerton High School, Class of 1936, he attended Mercersburg Academy and Franklin & Marshall College. He was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Slatington. He was formerly employed as a chemist at Prince Manufacturing Company in Bowmanstown , as well as, CK Williams and Baker Chemical. He was a co-owner and operator of Sun Valley Poultry Farm in Schnecksville and later was employed at the former ALPO Pet Foods as a quality control specialist, retiring as their production scheduling manager in 1985.

Survivors: In addition to his beloved wife, Marie; daughters, Joan M. Bachman and her husband Kermit with whom he resided in Gainesville, Florida, Gail P. Sander - Kirchoff and her husband J. Todd of Peyton, Colorado; sisters, Josephine Bock of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey and Rita Erschen of Berlinsville; grandchildren, Kristin M. Dasta of Lithia, Florida and Michael A. Quinlan of Salt Lake City, Utah; great granddaughter, Kayla M. Dasta; predeceased by a sister, Pauline Hanosek and brother Eugene Sander.

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2008 at the Assumption B.V.M. Roman Catholic Church, 633 West Washington Street, Slatington with the Rev. Joseph J. Grembocki as Celebrant. Family and friends may call 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc., 4906 Route 309, Schnecksville. Interment will follow the Mass at Ebenezer Church Cemetery, New Tripoli.

Contributions: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association and/or the Haven Hospice of North Central Florida both in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box # 196, Schnecksville, PA 18078-0196.
