Paul J. Schellenberger, 82, of Wescosville, died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 in his home. He was the husband of the late Lucille H. (Sourwine) Schellenberger.

Born in Brookdale on May 9, 1926, Paul was the son of the late James A. and Anna H. (Boyer) Schellenberger. He was a self-employed carpenter for most of his adult life and enjoyed sharing his time and talents with Habitat for Humanity where he was honored as a Master Builder and named Construction Volunteer of the Year in 2004 - 2005. He faithfully and honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was an Air Raid Warden. Having an uncanny likeness to Abraham Lincoln, Paul portrayed his life at many civic, public and private events.

He was a member of Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, where he formerly served on the Consistory and was the project manager for the church sponsored Habitat for Humanity home. He was the current Assistant Lion Tamer, was Past President and 40 year member of the Western Lehigh Lions Club; having a love of the outdoors, Paul was a 50 year member of the Mount Allen Hunting Club until 2005 and the Allentown Hiking Club, hiking several hundred miles along the Appalachian Trail. He was a member of the Lower Macungie Historical Society where he assisted in the restoration of a log cabin and the Lehigh Valley Hospital Community Exchange.

Out of the love for his country and its history, Paul was a member of the Honorary First Defenders, the Allentown Flag Day Association, the Pro-Monument Association of Lehigh County and the Liberty Bell Shrine Committee and volunteered for the Lower Macungie Township Area Veterans Recognition Project. He also devoted time to Beacon Lodge, a camp for the blind and ARC which is the Association for Retarded Children. Because working with wood was his passion, he was a member of the Lehigh Valley Wood Turners Association. He also enjoyed attending Schnecksville Senior Citizens.

Survivors: Daughters, Judi E. Davenport of Whitehall, Donna J. Schellenberger and Karen E. Benco both of Allentown; son, Eric D. Schellenberger of Whitehall; brother, William Schellenberger of Mertztown; grandchildren, Jason, Robyn and Julie; predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Newhard and Jean Haggerty and a brother, James Schellenberger.

Services: Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008 in the Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc., 4906 Route 309, Schnecksville with the Rev. Thomas N. Thomas officiating. Family and friends may pay their respects 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Union Church Cemetery, Neffs.

Contributions: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley and/or Union U.C.C. Memorial Fund both in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box # 196, Schnecksville, PA 18078-0196.

I enjoyed escorting Paul as Abe Lincoln as a Sgt. Of the 96th Pa. when we did events for The Honorary First Defenders and other groups. We also had a number of up lifting talks when I lost my Wife and about our time in the Navy for Paul and the Air Force for me.

Dear Schellenberger Family,

I met your father after I read about his woodworking skills in a Community Exchange newsletter.

He made a bookcase for my guest room, even carving out hearts along the top to personalize my design.

I'm sad that he is gone but I am delighted that I got to meet him and that I had a chance to see his work right here in my home.

my condolences on your loss.

This is a tribute I had wrote this a.m. to the Morning call. As my heart weeps today and the next day and the next day, I take great comfort in knowing that my dad has touched so many lives. Thank you for taking the time to make my dad feel special and for acknowledging his talents and special gifts. I know by my conversations with him, that he was loved by many and that he has left an imprint in your heart and mind. Hold onto that dearly, as I do, and remember a man that dedicated his life and freely gave to others in order to better out community. When I grieve today, I know that I am not alone. For I will continue to walk on this journey of life, with his spirit, light, and love inside me and I will find a way. Thank you all for remembering. Sincerely Donna Schellenberger

Paul always made me feel special, like I brightened his day because he was so glad to see me.

I'm thankful I introduced Paul to the Community Exchange. His participation brought him much joy, and he helped so many. Every time I saw him after he joined he glowed.

I already miss him.

I will truly miss Paul. When he liked someone, you knew it. I was always welcomed by Paul into his family. I learned to drink more tea with honey and learned more about Patriotism because of him. I will miss his bear hugs, twinkle in his eye and warm smile.

May you rest in peace, Paul.

Love, Linda
