Edward L. Hess, 90, of Hellertown, passed away Friday, June 27, 2008 at Saucon Valley Manor, Hellertown. He was the husband of the late Jean E. (Steigerwalt) Hess, who passed away in 1992. Born in Lower Saucon Township on March 15, 1918, Edward was the son of the late Edward E. and Wortha M. (Walp) Hess. A graduate of Lehigh University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Edward was employed in the Electrical Department of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 40 years before retiring in 1980. While employed at Bethlehem Steel, he received two patents in the electrical safety equipment field. Edward was a member of New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lower Saucon Township, where he formerly served on the Council. He was a Past Worshipful Master of former Hellertown Lodge # 569, F. & A.M., and a member of Lehigh Consistory, Valley of Allentown. An avid antique car restorer and collector, he was a member of the Kaiser-Fraser International Automobile Club, the Ontelaunee Antique Car Club, and enjoyed camping with the Scotty Club. He also enjoyed traveling the country in his 1949 Kaiser Traveler. He was Past President and Treasurer of the Hellertown/Lower Saucon School Board in 1965, a member of the Lower Saucon Historical Society, and served on the Board of the Northampton County Agricultural Extension. Survivors: Children: Edward G. Hess and his wife Linda of Salisbury Township; Christine E. Hess at home; The Rev. David L. Hess and his wife Linda of Slatington; John J. Hess and his wife Janet of Clarks Summit; Samuel J. Hess of Hellertown and his wife Irene; Carolyn J. Gough of Lehighton; foster son, Michael Gerstenberg of Moorestown; thirteen grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren. Services: Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3233 Apples Church Road, Lower Saucon Township, with The Rev. Lisa K. Borrell officiating. Family and friends may call 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the church. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery of Hellertown immediately following the service. The Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc. in Hellertown is in charge of arrangements. Online expressions of sympathy may be recorded at www.heintzelmanfh.com .
