LeRoy W. 'Curly' Phillips, age 89, formerly of Slatington PA and Davenport FL, died Friday, July 6, 2007 in The Phoebe Home, Allentown, where he was currently residing. He was the husband of Lucille E. (Reitz) Phillips. The couple celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary last August 10th.

Born in Coopersburg PA, May 10, 1918, Curly was the son of the late Thomas J. and Phoebe D. (Ketterer) Phillips. He was an Elementary School Teacher in the Parkland School District for 30 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to that, he taught in the Northwestern Lehigh School District and the Northern Lehigh School District for 9 years.

Curly was a Member of the PA Association of School Retirees. He was a Member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Slatington PA and a former Member of Holy Trinity United Church of Christ, Slatedale PA, where he served on the Consistory, holding the offices of President and Treasurer for many years. He also taught Sunday School at the Lehigh Furnace Sunday School.

A 32nd Degree Mason, Curly had many Masonic affiliations and achievements that included Worshipful Master of Slatington Lodge # 440 in 1979, High Priest of Slatington Royal Arch Chapter # 292 in 1970, Past President of the Joshua Association, in Allentown, Member of the Allen Commandry and the Rajah Shrine.

He was also Co-Founder of the Slatedale Athletic Association; Founder of the Slatedale Bowling League; a 4-H Leader for 12 years; served as Judge of Elections in Washington Township (West); and Member of the Rawd of Grundsow Lodge Nummer Ains an da Lechaw. In March, Curly received the Phoebe Ministries Deaconess Award.

He is survived by his Wife; Sons, Dr. Lee R. Phillips and his Wife Susan of Allentown PA and Richard E. Phillips and his Wife Barbara of Macungie PA; Brother, Carl T. Phillips of Allentown PA; Sisters, Mildred L. Wanamaker of Emerald PA and Margaret A. Snyder of Slatington PA; Grandchildren, Chad, Jessica, Lori, Amanda and Carrie; Great Grandchildren, Aubrey, Kaly, Christian, Riley, Eva and Ethan; and many Nieces and Nephews. He is predeceased in death by five Brothers.

Funeral Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 in the Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc., 4906 Route 309, Schnecksville PA with the Reverend Russell L.J. Heintzelman, officiating. Family and FriendS may call 7:00 - 8:30 pm. Tuesday in the Funeral Home. The Masonic Service will be 8:30 pm Tuesday. Interment will follow the service at Slatedale Cemetery.

Am so sorry to hear of Curly's passing. I know all the residents of FCI will dearly miss his presence. I personally will always remember his cheery way and smiling face whenever he came in the office.
